Things I Learned from Attending PTA Meetings
1
PS84 has Brooklyn’s first hydroponic rooftop greenhouse classroom. Built around 21st century sustainable urban farming principles, the greenhouse is designed to engage children through project-based teaching methods.
2
Our school has twelve drones in the Maker Space & Fab Lab that the kids can learn to program and fly!
3
The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) spends $200+ each year on EVERY STUDENT for programs and resources on top of the funds allocated to the school by the Department of Education (DOE). Our PTA raised over $100k last year thanks to parent volunteering, donations and fundraisers. Click here to see where those PTA dollars go.
4
Kids can be dropped off in the cafeteria for a free breakfast starting at 7:30am. (Pre Covid).
5
PS84 has three 3D printers! Students are given design challenges and then come up with solutions using a program called SketchUp. PS 84 students can participate in an annual citywide design competition.
6
There are 18 after-school pick up programs offered to PS84 students from third parties. Click here to view them. (Pre Covid).
7
The Garden Committee is creating a Monarch Butterfly Pollinator Habitat Garden full of native plants along the Grand Street side of the school (albeit currently hidden by the scaffolding).
8
Our school is now a part of Crayola Color Cycle (marker recycling program). A green initiative to teach kids to help care for our planet. Bins will soon be available in every classroom. Bring in your old markers from home!
9
We are one of two schools in the district to offer a Spanish Dual-Language program from Pre K through 8th grade.
10
PS84 prides itself on being a truly diverse school with students and staff from a myriad of races, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. Diversity leads to greater awareness, understanding, and acceptance of differing beliefs and customs. 768 kids attend PS84. (Pre Covid).
PTA meetings are now virtual and hosted the third Wednesday of each month, alternating between 8:30am and 6pm.
