Gifted and Talented Program

PS 84 has a 3rd grade G&T program entry point. We opened our doors to our first G&T class in the fall of 2022. Our current 5th grade G&T students will have priority when applying to our Middle School where the G&T program is scheduled to continue.

Project Based Learning

PS 84 has taken a project-based approach to our G&T class while using the same curriculum/themes as the rest of the school (ex. Into Reading/Illustrative Math). Below are some ways the program will support children in reaching their potential through accelerated instruction:

  • When working with high achieving students, teachers plan for ways to enrich lessons and might prepare differentiated tasks, problems, and activities and well as student directed approaches to learning and relationships/interactions.

  • Strategies are implemented to support all students in reaching their full potential. We will work on discovering the learning styles that are aligned to individual students and how they may be used to support accelerated student learning.

  • Personalized learning experiences incorporate student interests and student choice making as well as adjusted content, process, product or learning environment for tasks, activities and projects based on student strengths and needs.

  • Teachers will implement activities and projects in unique ways that present curious students with opportunities to further investigate problems.

  • Staff will present information and have students communicate information using multiple modalities and multimedia.

As with all our programs at PS 84, inclusion into the school wide community is priority. Best practices are shared between classes and no program is siloed.

Enrichments

All students will attend the same specials as the other concurrent grade classes: music, visual art, STEAM, PE, Greenhouse and PTA funded residencies.

Homework

PS 84 believes homework reinforces classroom learning while developing good study habits and allows parents to be involved with children's learning.  PS 84 also believes that engaging in quality time with family and friends is also just as important. Therefore, homework should not be a burden for student nor parent. G&T homework quantity will be in line with the rest of the child’s grade.
