Moving Up at PS 84:

What to Expect from End-of-Year Events

PS 84 takes students on an eleven year 3k-8th grade educational journey. As students progress through our academic continuum, we take time at the end of each school year to acknowledge and celebrate the growth and achievements of each and every student in the form of Moving Up ceremonies. In alignment with New York State Department of Education’s and New York City Public Schools’ policies which acknowledge graduation only as the completion of high school, PS 84 celebrates our students’ successes as described below:

Moving Up Ceremonies

Our Moving Up Ceremonies are thoughtful, joyful celebrations among classroom communities and their caregivers. Each student is personally acknowledged with a certificate for their unique contribution to classroom culture as well as their greatest area of growth. These events take place in the classroom for 3-k, pre-k, and grades 1-4, 6 and 7, and include light potluck refreshments.

PS 84 recognizes the end points of kindergarten, fifth grade and eighth grade as significant milestones in our students' academic journeys which merit greater acknowledgement.

  • Kindergarteners are celebrated with a Stepping Up ceremony to acknowledge the transition from early childhood education to numbered grades.

  • The end of 5th grade signifies students’ transition from our lower school to our middle school on our continuum. 5th graders are celebrated with a 5th grade trip, 5th grade picnic, and an Awards Ceremony.

  • 8th Graders have reached the end of their PS 84 experiences. PS 84 celebrates our 8th graders’ readiness for high school with an 8th grade trip, an 8th grade prom, and a formal 8th Grade Convocation Ceremony wherein students receive a certificate of completion and class superlatives are honored.
